PLATELET-RICH PLASMA

ABOUT PLATELET-RICH PLASMA

Furthering our commitment to patient wellness, Komin Medical Group is thrilled to now be offering Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections, an innovative treatment that harnesses the body’s own healing properties extracted from the patient’s blood in order to accelerate healing and stimulate new cell growth in the affected area. With uses ranging from treating sports injury and joint pain to reversing hair loss, PRP injections have the ability to kickstart your body’s natural healing process with a simple procedure. Schedule a consultation today to see if PRP is right for you!

WHAT IS PLATELET-RICH PLASMA?

Platelet-Rich Plasma injections are created by collecting a vile of the patient’s own blood. This vile is then spun in a centrifuge machine that separates the platelets from the red blood cells creating a concentrated substance called Platelet-Rich Plasma which is then injected into the patient’s problem area. In doing so, this procedure taps into the body’s natural healing processes found in blood cells to accelerate wound healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and even treat hair loss, as well as improve the appearance of the skin. PRP offers a natural and effective way to relieve pain, speed the healing of injuries, and even stimulate new growth and regeneration of tissues in the body.

WHAT ARE PLATELETS?

Let’s start with the basics. Platelets are blood cells, also called thrombocytes, that are responsible for healing processes in the body such as blood clotting and wound healing. When platelets are concentrated in a Platelet-Rich Plasma injection site, they can encourage speed healing using nothing more than your body’s natural growth factors that are released by platelets!

IS PLATELET-RICH PLASMA FOR SPORTS INJURIES, JOINTS, AND MUSCULAR PAIN

After a long year in lockdown, many of us are finding ourselves trying to get back into our regular exercise regimens as restrictions begin to loosen and more gyms are reopening their doors. However, this return to wellness can make you susceptible to injury or pain, which Platelet-Rich Plasma can help with!

All injuries, regardless of whether they occur in soft tissue or bone, must go through a series of phases to heal correctly. The first, and perhaps the most crucial, is the inflammatory phase in which platelets accumulate at the site of the injury and begin to release growth factors that initiate the inflammation. Platelet-Rich Plasma injections work to help speed up a slowly healing wound or start the healing process where it has not yet taken place.

Platelet-Rich Plasma injections have a wide range of applications throughout the entire body. Studies have suggested that PRP therapy may be helpful in enhancing soft -tissue repair, particularly for tendon and wound healing.

This is great news! Ailments occurring in the knee, lower leg, ankle, and foot, as well as in the hip, shoulder, and elbow, can each use PRP as a viable treatment option. PRP injections have had a great amount of success in healing ankle sprains, shin splints, tennis elbow, tendonitis, and even partial ligament tears! In doing so, this has helped many patients to avoid surgeries for various sports injuries as well as recurring aches and pains. Often, PRP injections are used in conjunction with physical therapy to help maintain flexibility and strength while the healing takes place.

INJECTION SAFETY

Unlike cortisone steroid injections, which are typically used to relieve pain from an injury, PRP instead aims to speed up the healing process of the affected area. Since platelet-rich plasma is created using a patient’s own platelets found in their blood, there is no risk of the body rejecting the treatment or transferring diseases. As with any injection, there is a small risk of infection at the injection site, and it is possible that the patient might experience some pain and tenderness from the procedure.

When you go for your initial consultation, our providers may recommend against PRP for hair loss if you:

  • Are on blood thinners
  • Are a heavy smoke
  • Have a history of alcohol or drug misuse

You might also be rejected for treatment if you’ve been diagnosed with:

    • acute or chronic infections
    • cancer
    • chronic liver disease
    • chronic skin disease
    • hemodynamic instability
    • hypofibrinogenemia
    • metabolic disorder
    • platelet dysfunction syndromes
    • systemic disorder
    • sepsis
    • low platelet count
    • thyroid disease

    BEFORE AND AFTER CARE

Although platelet-rich plasma injections are a fairly easy procedure, it is important to keep in mind a few key tips to help you achieve the best results from this treatment and help you feel your best moving forward. Before getting a PRP injection, it is recommended to stop all anti-inflammatory medications 5-7 days prior to receiving the treatment. This gives the PRP and growth factors the best chance at healing by encouraging the crucial aforementioned inflammatory phase. These may include certain over-the-counter medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Please be sure to check with your provider before stopping any medications.

Also, remember to drink plenty of water to avoid feeling faint as we will need to collect a vile of blood in order to extract the platelet-rich plasma gel to be injected into the problem area. Before receiving PRP injections, the area will be numbed using a local anesthetic. You can expect this numbness to stick around for about 2-3 hours after the procedure. You may also experience soreness at the site where the injection was administered as the platelet-rich plasma begins to heal the affected area by kickstarting the inflammatory phase. It is important to stay mobile but avoid overly strenuous activities, especially after receiving PRP for joint or muscular pains and injuries. You may also consider using Komin Medical Group’s physical therapy services in conjunction with PRP to help you to feel great as soon as possible!
